To develop the proficiency, expertise and leadership of our students consistent with their professional roles. 

            Annammal College of Education for Women is rigorously involved in imparting teacher education of the highest standard to its student for preparing them to be empowered and enriched women. Our quality policy starts and ends with the student as the focal point: understanding their requirements, designing infrastructural facilities and learning resources to meet the requirements, continuous improvement and updation of facilities and resources at all levels and distinguishing ourselves by the quality of our services.  Our commitment to quality is unflinching, our hunger for growth is deep rooted and our capacity for student welfare is amazing.

Annual Report  2007 – 2008

     Strategic planning is an essential process in the College of Education, providing guidance for college activities and allowing their assessment of, with subsequent improvement of those endeavours.  The plan of action chalked out by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell serves as an operational version of the college plan to enhance quality.  Our annual plan is embedded within a larger context of conceptual framework and this has been explained in terms of a set of objectives to be attained.  The activities planned for the academic year 2007 – 2008 are aimed at realizing the following objectives.

 *   Establish and maintain high level of teacher participation in developing e-learning resources.

*   Promote a positive image through activities that recognize college personnel.

*   Increase the technology competencies of the students.

*   Engage students in experiences that groom them for their career and instill in them a life long commitment to personal and professional development.

*   Strengthen the research interests of the faculty.

*   Model active participation in programmes that support the community outside our campus.

*   Expand the existing infrastructure to meet the growing pedagogical demands.

 

Having defined our objectives, the following activities were planned at the beginning of the academic year 2007 – 2008.

 *   Development of technical and communication skills of student teachers required in IT field.

*   Deputing a few of our teaching staff to learn the fundamentals of project based learning using Computer and in turn give training to all our teaching faculty  and prepare projects using Internet.

*   Extension programme organized by our student teachers in our model school using e-content generation resources.

*   Appreciation of the extra hours of work put in by our teachers.

*   Recognition of faculty who have completed their doctoral degree.

*   Ensuring that students handle audiovisual equipments with utmost ease.

*   Encouraging the use of technology during their course of study.

*   Provision of a general course that provides hands on training in computers.

*   Development of oratory skills among our students.

*   Exposing learners to ways to hone their teaching skills.

*   Arranging interactions with eminent educationists.

*   Initiating club activities that suit the individual interests of learners.

*   Encouragement to faculty to pursue research degrees.

*   Applying for grants to conduct research based programmes.

*   Participation in voluntary services that promote community feeling.

*   Addition of new classrooms and new hostel with improved facilities.

The above stated activities have been carried out with the following outcomes:

v      An extension activity was organized at Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls Higher Secondary School on 22nd January 2008. This programme showcased the presentation skills of our students who reasoned out fundamental scientific phenomena using power point presentation. 

v      The students find themselves equipped with the basic skills needed in using computers for educational purposes.  They are happy that they have been exposed to the use of new technologies in their course of study.  Our students were encouraged to use our Network Resource Center without any time restriction to carry out their practicum to fruition. Internet facilities have been provided to our staff and students free of cost with round the clock browsing. 

v      The students community feel that their commitment to their chosen profession has been strengthened by listening to the words of great educationists and eminent personalities like Hon’ble Minister for Animal Husbandry Mrs.P.Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi District Collector Mr.R.Palaniyandi, Prof.B.Krishna Reddy, Regional Director, NCTE, Bangalore. 

v      Various barriers in developing communication skills have been removed as a result of the Public Speaking Practice given to our students. Talent shows, English and Tamil plays and extension programmes were initiated to develop their skills. 

v      A number of clubs like English Club, Tamil Club, Science Club, History Club, Maths Club, IT Club, Red Ribbon Club, Research Club and Health Club have been started and the students find themselves engaged in activities that promote cooperative spirit and teamwork. 

v      Our teachers find themselves free to pursue any course of higher study for their further development.  Three of our teaching staff are doing their Doctoral Degree in Tamil and Education. 

v      We have submitted a proposal to organize a funded workshop entitled “Developing Mathematical Wizards through Olympiad” to TANSAC for mathematics teachers from three districts. 

v      The need to serve the community has been reemphasized through participation in first aid camp organized by Dr.Achuthan. 

v    16 of our PGDCA Students participated in a programme on “EMPOWER IT - Web designing and Soft skills” organized by ELCOT  on 18th January 2008. 

v      Communication skills are the absolutely essential possessions of the teaching community. This fact has been emphasized in all our policies and programmes. Our College President Shri. D. Ganesan restated its importance in the discussion he had with our general English students on 19th January 2008. He also presented a book authored by Mr. Bernard titled “Learning Techniques for Peek Performance” as an aid to hone their communication skills. 

v      To motivate and encourage the History  optional student teachers our management presented a copy of the book titled “History of  Tuticorin” on 26.4.08.

Our college shows interest in exposing our students to employment opportunities even before they step out of our college.  Requisition to organize campus interview were sent to a number of reputed schools in Tamilnadu

We strongly believe in expanding the knowledge of our faculty.  To facilitate this we encourage them to attend seminars, workshops and other training programme that cater to the professional needs of our teachers.  Our management meets all the expenses of participants.

 

A ‘Teacher Assessment Questionnaire’ was given to all B.Ed. and M.Ed. students in the month of January.  On this basis of the performances of the teachers were analyzed.  The members of the staff were personally notified of their weaknesses and strengths in their teaching styles and useful suggestions were given to improve their teaching practices.

The Parent Teacher Association of Annammal College of Education for Women acts as a forum for developing ideas that bring closer relations between home and the college.  It believes that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of their children.

           

Detail of the plan of the institution for the next year:

            We have developed an Institutional Master Plan for the academic year 2008-2009 that highlights the programmes based on our emerging priorities.  A few major events have been planned to keep us move meaningfully towards excellence. These include:

1.  As an institution of education, we wish to place special emphasis upon nurturing emerging researchers who can benefit from and contribute to development of new pedagogical patterns.  In continuation of this activity we have decided to organize a national level conference on “Emerging Trends in Pedagogical Research” which will serve as a forum to budding researchers for intellectual engagement and enquiry.  This programme has been scheduled tentatively to be organized in January 2009. 

2.  Education being the balance wheel of the social machinery has a vital role to eradicate the social evils of the day.  A national level UGC sponsored seminar on “Combating the evils of Aids and Drug Abuse using Student Power” shall be organized in the month of August by the Health Club to strengthen the social commitment of our student community. 

3.  “Philately” is not a mere pass time activity.  It is a promising hobby that extends our horizon of knowledge.  To generate awareness among college students on the educational value of Philately, a state level “Philately Exhibition cum Workshop” is to be organized in the month of November. 

4.   A literary campaign that is area - specific, time – bound, volunteer – based & cost – effective is to be organized by our students in selected under developed areas of our hometown.  We plan to sensitize our students to the need for participation in literacy campaigns and recruit them as volunteers to carry out the work. 

5.  As we feel that we need to produce teachers who are well informed on social evils that affect and are affected by education, an exhibition on social awareness among students shall be organized.  This shall cover vital social themes like child labour, gender discrimination, alcoholism, cultural degeneration and environment pollution.

6.  The students and staff shall work together to create a programme that shall boost the students’ academic skills. The areas that can be worked on include:

X       Study skills and time management.

X       Effective listening and note taking.

X       Test taking strategies and test anxiety. 

7.   Spoken English Modules will be developed for students found to lack oral fluency in English.  Once completed the programme shall have a hugely positive impact on the teaching potential of our students. 

8.   Tutorial groups shall focus on educational guidance of students with the aim of removing the learning difficulties of the students.  Slow learners and under achievers shall be identified in the beginning of the course and appropriate measures shall be taken to boost the achievement of these students. 

9.  We take pride in maintaining a green campus in a place known for water scarcity.  More tree saplings shall be procured and the students shall be made to participate in sapling plantation programme. 

10. The clubs of our college like English Club, Research Club, History Club, Mathematics Club, Eco Club, Health Club, Tamil Club and Science Club , IT Club shall design their own projects and programmes and execute them to fruition as in the previous year.  These programmes shall cater to the diverse interests of our students 

11. “Youth Festival” a mega event that provides opportunities to student teachers to showcase their talents in varied cultural items shall be organized by the Students Council of our college for all College of Education affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. 

12. We draw a considerable part of our strength from our alumni.  Many of our alumni hold honourable positions in reputed educational institutions.  We have planned to make the best use our alumni as resource persons for the various programmes to be organized in our college in the academic year 2008-2009.    

13. We encourage our teachers to prepare e-teaching modules in their area of specialization.  A few of our teachers shall actively involve themselves in the task of generating e-learning resources that can be of much use to e-learners worldwide.  The management shall provide adequate support to undertake this work. 

14. The University Grants Commission has sanctioned 45 lakhs for extending the hostel of our college.  This work shall be completed in the next year and such an expansion shall enable us to provide individual rooms and add to our plans for campus improvement. 

In additional to the above planned activities, we shall organize others that would prepare our students for academic and post college achievement.
